Sex goes high-tech, as usual

The porn industry, or to use the accepted euphemism, the adult industry, has long led the way into mainsteam adoption of technologies, from commercial photography to the VCR and the Web. So it’s interesting to look at a few recent trends. Indeed, the porn industry has been given some of the credit for the success of VHS over Betamax, back in the 1980s.
Unsurprisingly, then, there are those looking to the adult industry in the question of HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray.
MacWorld has a story saying the industry is opting for HD-DVD, based largely on the fact that Digital Playground is releasing four HD-DVD films.
MacWorld reports that industry leader Vivid Entertainment is “currently using the HD-DVD format because it was the first to come out, but his studio will begin burning to the Blu-ray format as soon as it’s available.”
Back in November, though, TVPredictions.com reported that, “the studio’s first high-def DVD will be on Blu-ray and not HD-DVD.” It quotes Vivid’s CEO, Steve Hirsch as saying, “As of now, it will just be Blu-ray. But that’s not to say we won’t release it in HD-DVD later.”
Some other technologies to watch:
Phone chat
For example, check out AdultPhoneChat.co.uk (but maybe don’t if you’re at work).
Have a Live Chat with our sexy Girls, talk to Genuine Singles or Couples, Spy on other callers’ private conversations or listen to your favourite erotic Fantasy Stories.
You can also get Mobile Porn right to your phone and even watch and chat to horny girls on Live Web Cams!
Why not choose one of our exclusive horny ringtones, logos, pictures and videos!
User-generated content
See, for example, MyAdultPhoneClips.co.uk, which seems to be a sister site to the above, and is equally unsafe-for-work:
Create hot video clips via your mobile phone and send them to 07753 377969 together with the word APC + your title or description
Your video will be approved and made live on to this site for others to download and enjoy on their mobile phones.
Each month you will be paid cash for all your videos that have been downloaded. Please register for a free account or click on “How To” for more information.
If porn leads in high-tech, the same can’t be said about its journalism. You would expect a trade pub like AVN to give us the inside story, but it’s HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray story does nothing more than repeat the MacWorld one (with barely enough credit given).

Interesting…the porn industry is quite the trend-setter….what the devil is the difference between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? Is it basically going to be the same war that was Betamax vs. VHS?

Each is a way of using blue lasers to do what DVD technology has been doing with red lasers. If you remember your rainbow, blue light is shorter (fewer angstroms) than red, so the data can be packed closer together, meaning higher-capacity disks. The two standards do it differently, and different movie studios and consumer electronics manufacturers have lined up behind one or the other.
Here’s an IEEE Spectrum blog entry from the recent CES about them,
Here’s a Cnet page that describes the differences in detail.

This is indeed a sad day for many porn performers. Now the slightest blemish can be seen. Either the cover-up industry’s gonna go through the roof or we’ll start seeing “Pimple Butt’s Anal Adventures 1-75.”

There is that fairly well known quote “Never underestimate the bandwidth of a truck full of CDs barrelling down the road at 120km/h.”, which will probably stand for quite some time but I believe the future of media, especially dirty stuff where you want it NOW, will be streaming off the net. Even with mainstream content, look at the BBC, they’re trialing it right now. It’s going to change TV as we know it.

I’m a pretty firm believer that downloads will always beat streaming.
Julie and Sarah both, I’m curious about what you think the impact of the iPhone will be when it comes to advancing porn technology.
